A Road Trip to Myself

roadtrip-2

Sometimes, you just need to move—physically, mentally, or emotionally.
To clear your mind.
To make space for decisions, dreams and goals.

That’s what this trip was for me.
I drove from New Jersey to Michigan.
A total round trip of 1,800 kilometers (about 1,200 miles) in 48 hours.
It was far in distance, but even deeper in meaning.
This was simply a chance to move.

(Okay… I was going there to help my daughter move out, too. But hey, what a perfect excuse for a road trip to myself.)

I passed through many tunnels carved into the mountains.
Some were so long and dark, I couldn’t see the end.
They felt claustrophobic like the walls were closing in.
Just like life sometimes, when we’re in the middle of something messy, a big transition, a hardship, or a demanding project.
But if you keep going just a little longer, there’s always light at the end.

And then came the trees. The buildings. The landscapes.
One by one, they passed beside me, just like my thoughts.
Appearing.
And passing.
I didn’t cling to any of them.
I just kept driving.

Moving forward always brings me back to clarity.
Not to escape.
But to return to what matters.

Swimming, walking, skiing, driving…these are my ways back.
They create movement on the outside, which creates stillness on the inside.
When I swim, especially in open water, I feel free.
When I walk in nature, I feel grounded.
When I ski, I feel light.
When I drive long distances, I let go.
I let go of the pressure, the noise, the need to figure it all out.

When we move forward, the brain settles.
The nervous system calms.
The noise clears, and clarity begins.
It shows us what’s ours and what’s not.
It makes space for truth.
For simplicity.
For life to start flowing in its natural rhythm.

So the next time you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or in need of clarity—just move.
You don’t need a plan.
You need motion.
You need a road trip to yourself.
